Message of Welcome

The royal game has captured a regular place in the city of Mainz. From 14th to 18th August, chess fans world-wide will focus their attention on our city when the Chess Classic Mainz 2002, the world's most famous rapid chess event, will be staged in the Rheingoldhalle for the second time. After a splendid debut last year, Hans-Walter Schmitt has once again succeeded in putting together a programme which combines numerous highlights in a tightly-packed schedule.

Besides the duel between the world champions, Viswanathan Anand and Ruslan Ponomariov - the youngest champion ever - the Duel of the Graces between Alexandra Kosteniuk and Elisabeth Paehtz can guarantee both sporting and elegant brilliance. It makes no difference if simuls, classic rapid chess or Fischer chess are on the cards - everything has been prepared to provide sheer excitement. Attractive all-in deals are available to enjoy sport and entertainment in a relaxed ambience.

I will have the support of a computer when I meet Viswanathan Anand. This is a completely new experience for me to rely on my intuition and on the tactical abilities of the computer. I'm really excited and looking forward to this contest with high hopes.

Come and enjoy our beautiful city and will visit local restaurants which are famous for their culinary and viticulture specialities. I wish all the visitors of Chess Classic Mainz 2002 an entertaining, exciting and successful stay in Mainz.

Jens Beutel
Lord Mayor of the City of Mainz
