Simuls

Ruslan Ponomariov

On this picture you can see Ruslan in action during his first tournament in Germany. The 18-year old world champion (ELO 2743) played against 40 opponents. The Russian had to walk a lot and tolds us afterwards that he was happy to have a day off on Thursday. Ponomariov played 1.e4 on all the boards, which is quite remarkable.

After 4 hours and 20 minutes the score was: +30 = 8 -2

Only the amateurs Jürgen Kleinert and Horst Eidam were able to win a game against the world champion. Ponomariov had to sit down against Christoph Driftmann for the last ten minutes of the simul. The visitors gathered around the board and watched an exciting endgame that suddenly ended in stalemate.

Alexandra Kosteniuk

The beauty from Russia (ELO 2459) seemed to have an easier task, because she had to play on 25 boards. However, Alexandra took her time and after no less than 5 hours and 29 minutes, she had scored 16 wins, 3 three draws and lost 6 games.(+16=3-6). 12-year old Daniel Körnlein from the local chessclub Frankfurt-West was the hero of the evening. He is probably still too young to be impressed by "Sexy Sascha" and won a smashing game.
